The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States on five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted figures that were at the heart of efforts to enact laws regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the move.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and European institutions.
