Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have joined forces with France's air force in a joint strike against an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The location, located using intelligence, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was located in hills just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a several entry passages providing entry to the site... early reports suggest the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the strike late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - referred to as ISIS - established militant control over parts of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike demonstrates British leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with allied nations, to stamp out any revival of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary stated.

British military aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted comeback" of the group following its routing at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of British forces participating in this strike for their professionalism and their valour," Healey added. "They were among thousands of UK service members on duty over the holidays. This action, to eliminate terrorist threats who endanger our way of life, highlights how British military are always on standby, all year round, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and influential overseas."

During December, the United States armed forces executed what it called a "major assault" targeting Islamic State objectives in Syria, following an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. says Daesh still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Iraq and Syria.
