No fewer than thirteen individuals perish and ninety-eight injured in rail accident in Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the pace and management of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.

The accident happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link developed to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this accident,” declared the head of state.

The official reported that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The official noted plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.

Key Undertaking of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the previous administration, whose time in office finished the year before. This rail line was intimately linked to his leadership's economic vision for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.

Building Management and Safety Concerns

The development of both rail lines was managed by the nation's military, marking a notable increase of its duties in public projects. They were completed at an fast-tracked speed, surpassing expectations to be partially launched before the end of that government.

However, this accelerated timeline had also sparked ongoing concerns over safety standards.

  • Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an earlier accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-deadly derailments.

Calls for Review and Suspension

In the wake of the tragedy, the head of a major opposition party called for an prompt pause in the building and running of all similar projects.

This halt was requested while awaiting a full technical review. The party emphasized that the tragedy "demands prompt explanations."

In response, the national leader asserted that the train had been running in total adherence to all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and operation of these national projects.
