Pentagon Investigation Finds Hegseth Put Troops in Danger with Signal Chat.

A long-awaited Department of Defense report has concluded that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth violated official protocols by sharing secret intelligence in a Signal messaging chat, according to a person briefed on the findings.

Details of the Incident

The online conversation in question included particulars about a planned air attack in Yemen targeting Houthi fighters. This chat came to light after a journalist for the Atlantic was included as a member.

Other officials in the chat allegedly included JD Vance, CIA director John Ratcliffe, and former security advisor Mike Waltz. The investigation did not examine the conduct of Hegseth, as the other officials are not employed at the Pentagon.

Signal is a commercially offered messaging app that was not approved for transmitting sensitive material.

Serious Threat to Forces

The internal investigation determined that the intelligence circulated by Hegseth was secret and posed a risk to the safety of US service members if it had been obtained by a hostile nation.

However, the report also noted that Hegseth possessed the authority to declassify the material he distributed, though it was unclear whether he actually did so.

Secretary's Response

The source indicated that Hegseth refused to be interviewed by the investigators. Instead, he provided a brief written statement.

In his response, Hegseth asserted he only shared details that would not have endangered personnel or compromised the operation. He added that he possessed the authority to downgrade information and considered the inspector general to be politically motivated.

Next Steps

The finalized investigation has been provided to lawmakers. An unclassified version is anticipated to be made public in the coming days.
