The fast bowler Poised for a Significant Contribution in Iconic Rivalry

Pat Cummins bowling

The pace bowler has taken over 300 dismissals in 71 Test matches with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian chief selector George Bailey has declared that captain Pat Cummins will play a "major part" in the forthcoming Ashes series.

Speculation had been growing that Cummins might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.

Initial reports from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest set to start on November 21 in the WACA.

Bailey expressed that the captain is progressing and felt positive about the likelihood of being involved.

"We're aware that time is getting short and there are permutations around that, not only the back issue, but further aspects," the selector added.

"It's positive. There's strong faith that he's going to play a key capacity. With luck from the opening match. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."

Past Concerns

Cummins was ruled out the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals recently after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.

Previous incidents include of recurring issues, with flare-ups in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss three Australian summers in a short span.

Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the series.

The selector indicated that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "getting tight" for him to regain fitness for the initial match.

Contingency Plans

In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from the national team for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of an abdominal issue.

The selector characterized it as a "small issue and stated that Green will play in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to resume bowling."

"Extensive planning has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the opening match as an dual-role player," Bailey explained.

"He was only going to play the starting games regardless. His aggressive style the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for another day, we just made the decision to adopt a safer strategy."
