Pick of the Week
This Satirical Thriller
The filmmaker's unflinching commentary addresses the oppressive nature of feminine aesthetics as well as the feared consequences of ageing. Hollywood star Demi Moore offers an inspired acting turn as Elisabeth, a mature actress reduced to starring in a workout series on the small screen. Edged out thanks to her unscrupulous employer Harvey, she turns to a secretive and terrifying treatment called "The Substance". This generates a youthful duplicate called Sue, resulting in a progressively parasitic dynamic between the two. This Friday, Paramount+
The Woman in Cabin 10 Film
This Agatha Christie-esque story stars Keira Knightley as Laura, an ace reporter who takes a break from writing about global conflict to embark on a high-end voyage accompanied by a gravely sick Norwegian shipping heiress and donor, her spouse, as well as other extremely wealthy individuals. However when an unknown lady disappears from the ship during the evening and all passengers denies she ever existed, the reporter's sleuthing skills awaken. Streaming currently, the Netflix platform
Presence
Soderbergh challenges his film-making abilities with this innovative paranormal narrative shot entirely through the eyes of a ghost. As a family featuring mother Rebekah plus Callina Liang as Chloe occupies their recent residence, the filming device – AKA the Presence – tracks their movements. Chloe seems conscious of the poltergeist, and the entity appears guarding her. However, the motive remains? This is an entertaining concept that doesn't outstay its welcome, with a twist that could catch you off guard. October 11th, multiple showings, Sky Cinema

The Black Phone Horror
The director's locked-room horror stands strong despite the lack of a follow-up. Located in 1978 Denver, several disappearances has made the local kids frightened. After Finney is taken by “the Grabber” and held captive in a basement, he dreads a fatal end. But the old telephone on the wall repeatedly calls, with spooky callers providing assistance, and the prophetic visions of Gwen, his sister might rescue him. A solid creepfest. October 11th, nighttime, Film4
The Tammy Faye Biopic
In the battle between spirituality and money, the victory is clear for materialism in this director's delightfully tacky film adaptation of the disgraced TV preacher and her criminal husband. Andrew Garfield portrays the venal Jim, who states initially, “God does not want us to be poor,”. The couple commence monetising the nation's spiritual convictions. It's an extravaganza of poor styling, overdone appearance and hypocrisy, yet Jessica Chastain manages to present the character with compassion. October 14th, 1.15am, the Film4 channel
This Espionage Thriller
