The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in utilizing replay systems.
Video review technology will be launched at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.
Players will gain the option to challenge certain rulings from the chair umpire, echoing the practice currently in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
This technology will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.
This move arrives only a year after the AELTC implemented ELC, which effectively ended the longstanding tradition of line judges.
Scope of Challenges
Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the call of the ELC system, but they can request the umpire to re-examine other situations, including:
- Whether a ball has double-bounced.
- If a ball touched an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
- Possible interference at the conclusion of a point.
Notably, there is an unlimited number on the number of reviews a competitor can ask for.
Case in Point
A recent example took place in Indian Wells last week, where a top player used the review system against his opponent.
The British player conceded it was a tough call for the official, but believed his rival had "used the regulations quite well."
The umpire viewed a video and ruled Draper was guilty of interference, awarding the point to Medvedev.
Wider Implementation
This technology aren't new for Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open this year.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system in place at every one of its tournaments.
Additional Innovations
Another innovation at Wimbledon this year will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.
This solves instances where spectators have occasionally been unsure if a shot was out or in.
In other news, with precisely 100 days to go until the start of the tournament, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
